Can excessive sun exposure damage your roof?

In Florida, you’re surely aware that hurricanes, heavy storms, hail, and wind may cause roof damage; but sun exposure is typically overlooked. It’s crucial to understand the sorts of damage it can do to your roof, so you know when to schedule a roof inspection to determine if you need to repair or replace your roof.  A well-maintained roof will protect your home from weather-related harm. Better safe than sorry.

Orlando Shingle Roof Inspection & Replacement

Constant exposure to sun rays causes cumulative damage to your roof shingles. Shingles are small, overlapping or interlocking tiles that are used as the cover of the roof. They can last 25 to 50+ years. In Florida, due to humidity and sun damage, shingles’ lifespan can be expected to be reduced by half.

UV radiation from the sun, extreme heat, and thermal shock are the most common causes of roof damage, causing bleaching, warping, and cracking of your shingles.

Direct sunlight causes asphalt shingles to heat up quickly, deforming them and accelerating their normal endurance period of wear and tear. Shingles warp by extreme heat; a roof inspection can easily help in spotting curled shingle edges. Roofs made of plastic or metal heat up quicker and can also become warped, and experience heat degradation.  Constant exposure to UV radiation will also make the roof materials dry and increase their brittleness making them more prone to cracks.

Thermal Shock. The heat exposure from the sun during the day, followed by a dip in temperature at night, causes the materials on your roof’s structure to expand and contract at a rapid rate. Years of this degrades materials and increases wear and tear. Because the materials used in newer roofs are more flexible, they may absorb thermal shock better than older roofs.

A reflective coating can be applied to the roof to reduce the amount of heat it can collect and will reduce the effects of extreme heat and thermal shock damage.

Bleaching.  Sun damage by UV radiation is most likely the reason your shingles have faded significantly from their original color. This usually happens at the end of their lifespan and is the first clue that you need to contact roofing contractors for repair. Finding a shingle or tile color that will not quickly fade after a few years is the best approach here.

With so many roofing options available, it is essential to choose the appropriate roofing material to withstand Florida’s sunny weather and extreme heat, such as metal roofs (very durable) and green roofs (reduce heat absorption). If your property has old shingles, consider replacing your roof. Find a roofing contractor to assess the condition of your roof and contact experts with a great reputation for providing excellent service at reasonable prices. Hire a licensed local company that can provide a material and workmanship warranty. Poor roof installations can lead to further difficulties, so getting the job done right is important.
